glass people

written as a submission to the nomad review

all around me are glass people

refracting like snowflakes around me

their glass feet chiming on the floor

but walking as carefully as glass can be

.

see all these glass people

their speech pouring like water

but they keep their words laminar

in fear they may shatter each other

.

just enough heat can shape glass people

but too much force cause them to crack

there’s already enough pressure everywhere

to threaten our state of being intact

.

are we weak, or are we strong?

why are we made in such a way?

is it worth being so easy to break

just to refract the sun’s rays?

.

to be vulnerable, but so tough

to cleave into pieces, but last generations

this is what it means to be glass

to be sand-evolved amorphous amalgamations

.

we can be so easy to break sometimes

we embarrass ourselves with weakness

but like glass we will always hold our shine

even when we are in millions of pieces

.

so admire all these glass people

they’d rather shatter than go out without a fight

because all the breaking will be worth it

when their shards create rainbows from light
